Solidarity Statement with Autistici/Inventati (A/I)

danish version

Two days ago, the tech collective Autistici/Inventati was sanctioned by the US government as a terrorist group.

As both users, supporters, and kin of Autistici/Inventati - sharing the cause of running autonomous infrastructure with a similar ethos (anti-capitalist, anti-militarist, feminist, fighting against repression on the internet for initiatives under political pressure) and built on FLOSS (Free/Libre Open Source Software) - we accuse the US government of censorship and digital repression, and stand in full solidarity with Autistici/Inventati.

The actions of the US government is a direct attack on all organizations fighting for human rights around the world, that require autonomous communications networks to organize their work, as well as a direct attack on everyone building their own infrastructure as an alternative to the regime of hegemonic US tech corporations.

The internet has long disappointed and shown that it is a center of state-corporate control. We believe that it should be a network built for the free dissemination and acquisition of knowledge, relations, expressions, and activism. The internet should be a federation of autonomous networks. Autistici/Inventati represents such a network that we can relate to - and find hope in - allowing a large number of people and organizations to have a presence on the web without compromising, and to communicate or exchange information confidentially. Autistici/Inventati are running this as a voluntary service with a donation model to avoid income discrimination.

Today, two days after the sanction, ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) removed Autistici/Inventati’s domain (autistici.org) from the web, an act of centralized censorship again showing that the WWW and its "global" organizations are directly controlled by the US government.

For the future, we hope this designation of autonomous infrastructure as terrorism will create urgency for autonomous server infrastructures to multiply for the cause of safety, redistribution of wealth, equitable use of resources, and protection of human rights. We will continue caring for our own infrastructure and working for the sprouting of autonomous, anti-capitalist, and anti-fascist server kinships, and we see the US designation ofAutistici/Inventati as a direct attack on our cause.

We urge all actors to pressure the US government to lift it’s sanctions on Autistici/Inventati.

To finish off this solidarity statement, we repeat the ending of this response:

Antifascism and anticapitalism are not terrorism. Protesting is not terrorism. And everyone has the right to speak out and to struggle for humanity.
